Montu vs Semrush
Semrush has data Montu will never match, and Montu does the half of marketing Semrush does not do at all. The honest split: Semrush tells you what to do, Montu does it — and Semrush costs two to five times more.
Semrush in 2026: 50-plus tools, the Content Toolkit / ContentShake AI at about $60 a month on top, and a separately priced AI Toolkit for brand visibility inside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Core plans run $139–$500 a month.
Montu and Semrush, capability by capability
Both columns are scored the same way, from our own September 2026 competitor study. Montu's column is written once and reused on every comparison page, so it cannot be quietly improved on the page where nobody is checking.

Where Semrush is genuinely better
Not a strawman. These are the things we would tell you to buy Semrush for, in our own words.
Data at a scale we will not match
Backlink database, historical data, daily rank tracking with SERP features and keyword databases nobody in this category comes close to. If your work is data-led, this is what you are paying Semrush for, and it is worth it.
Content Optimizer improves pages you already have
It scores and rewrites an existing page against the live SERP. This is the single biggest hole in Montu — everything Montu writes is new. Semrush also gives you topical maps and some internal-link support around it.
Site audit depth and position tracking
Log-file-grade technical checks, position tracking and competitive traffic estimates. Montu audits your site; Semrush audits it harder, and has been doing it for longer.
Mature reporting, exports and an API
Saved views, filters, exports, scheduled reports, project scoping and a public API. Montu produces client reports in PDF, PNG and PPTX; it does not have the rest of that machinery.
What Montu does not do
Five capabilities we score ourselves zero on. They are the same five on every one of these pages, and every one of them is something a tool on this list does.
- Optimise a page you already published. Montu writes new pages. It has no flow that takes a URL you already published, scores it against the live SERP and rewrites it. Semrush, Surfer and Writesonic all do.
- Topical maps and cluster planning. No cluster or pillar planner. Montu researches keywords and writes against them; it will not draw you a topic map first. Semrush and Surfer will.
- Internal linking automation. No automated internal linking between the pages Montu writes. Surfer wires those links for you; we do not.
- AI video and reels. No video and no reels, of any kind, anywhere in the product. Simplified does this and does it well.
- Public API. No public API and no no-code workflow builder. You use Montu through its dashboard. Jasper and Semrush both ship an API; Jasper also lets you build your own agents.
Three of those five — optimise-an-existing-page, topical maps and a public API — are things Semrush ships today, and it has partial internal-link support on top.
Where Montu wins
The same standard, pointed the other way: what Montu does that Semrush does not.
Montu produces the asset, not a brief
Semrush hands you a brief and a score; a human still writes, designs and posts it. Montu ships the article, the product and category copy, the social posts, the designs and the email — and publishes them to WordPress or Shopify.
The whole design, social and outreach half
Design generation, social content for five networks, Leads Magnet, Email Campaigns, Ads Taps, targets, KPIs, planner and client reporting — none of which Semrush produces. Montu's Radar also watches a competitor's actual page, price, offer and messaging changes every six hours, which Semrush does not do.
AI visibility in the base price
Share of voice, citation share, sentiment and a per-engine breakdown across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, with competitor brands named alongside you — in the same token bucket, not a separately priced AI Toolkit.
Usable in days, not weeks
Reviewers describe a two-to-four-week ramp on Semrush and call the interface cluttered. Montu is a URL in and first content out in minutes, with every action stating its token cost before you spend it and refunding automatically if the run fails.
What Montu and Semrush actually cost
The headline price, and then the number you pay once the add-ons a real setup needs are included.
Semrush
$139/month
Core plans are $139–$500 a month. The Content Toolkit is roughly $60 a month on top, the AI Toolkit is priced separately again, and seats cost extra. Reviewers put real-world cost at $199–$549.
A comparable Semrush setup lands around $199/month.
Montu
$29 – $559/month
Six tiers, and every tool is unlocked on every one of them — there is no feature gating by plan. One token bucket spends across analyses, articles, social, design, email and ads, each run priced before you spend it and refunded automatically if it fails. $89/month is the Growth tier, which covers 20 websites.
$89 a month on Growth covers 20 websites and every tool, with no add-ons to add. The equivalent Semrush footprint starts around $199 before seats — and buys data Montu does not have.
Who should pick Semrush, and who should pick Montu
Pick Semrush if…
- You live in backlink, historical and daily rank data, and depth matters more to you than output.
- Most of your work is improving pages that already exist and planning clusters around them.
- You need an API, saved views, scheduled reports and project scoping for a large team.
Pick Montu if…
- You want the content, designs, social posts and emails actually produced and published, not briefed.
- You want one flat price with every tool included, instead of a core plan plus two add-ons plus seats.
- You want AI-engine visibility and agent readiness without a second subscription.
